In one of the most bizarre stories ever narrated on a radio show, a man from New Zealand reportedly called his parents on the phone six months after they were told that he had passed away. On an episode of Fletch, Vaughan and Hayley on ZM Online, the caller whose name was Callum narrated the entire story which left the hosts in complete splits. Let’s take a closer look at the weird and hilarious story of Callum, the man who called his parents after six months of being ‘dead’.
Man calls parents after ‘death’, explained
In this particular segment of the radio show, the hosts had left an open question for their callers: “Have you ever been presumed dead?” One particular caller, who we know only by his name Callum, began narrating the story which shocked Fletch, Vaughan and Hayley.
His answer began in explosive fashion as he said, “Yes, my parents thought I was dead for six months.” Callum explained that his sisters had a ‘problem’ with their parents at the time. In order to get back at them, they lied to them that their brother had passed away.
Notably, Callum was living in Wellington away from his parents who were living in Christchurch. His eldest sister had called up their parents and told them that they already had a funeral for Callum and that his ex-girlfriend’s parents did not want them there.
Callum’s sisters make up his death
One of the show’s hosts, Vaughan Smith, even interrupted Callum’s story to describe his sister with expletives and called her a ‘red flag’. The man continued to explain that he had not communicated with his parents for six months since he was busy with work and life. The man even visited his parents in person right after the call to prove he was really alive and they were clearly over the moon to see their son.
Finally, when Callum decided to call his parents, they were taken aback to find out that he was alive. Vaughan, who was the most interested among the three hosts about Callum’s story, interrogated more about how the man called his parents after six months of being dead.
Why did the parents not check on him for six months?
The host asked the caller why the parents did not bother checking up on their son’s ‘death’ simply because his ex-girlfriend’s family did not want them there. Callum responded that they had called up their friends and family to see if they heard anything.
The other host, Carl Fletcher, asked Callum about the cause of his fake death, according to his parents. While he expected an answer like a car accident or a drowning, the man’s response left the radio hosts stunned – a stabbing.

Fletch, Vaughan and Hayley burst into laughter as they asked him why his parents did not bother getting justice for their son’s alleged murder. Vaughan even questioned if Callum was the kind of person for whom it would be normal to be on the receiving end of a stabbing.
The man hilariously responded that while he was not part of any gangs, it would still “not be unpeculiar” for him to be stabbed by someone at that time. The hosts called it the greatest sentence ever said on-air in ZM history.
Radio show hosts reward Callum for wild story
The hosts were completely bowled over by the story of the man who called his parents after six months of being dead. They decided to reward him as the ‘caller of the week’ despite having picked a winner just the previous day.
They called it the wildest story that they had ever heard on air and gifted him a $50 McCafe voucher. As of now, Callum claims that his parents don’t talk to his sisters anymore as a result of the fallout from the incident.
