NewJeans bags the Artist Of The Year award at MAMA 2023
This year’s MAMA Awards have remained controversial for not being able to garner as much audience as usual. Many have also shared their doubts about the credibility after the relatively mild show. This was quite an expected win as NewJeans have dominated the music charts, trending list on social media, and the playlists of K-pop fans with back-to-back hit songs including Hype Boy, Super Shy, ETA, and more.
Therefore, what makes this win particularly significant is that they have also broken the 12-year record of boy groups winning all the grand prizes at major year-end shows. The last time a girl group won the Artist Of The Year grand prize was in 2011, when Girl’s Generation bagged the trophy for dominating the year with ‘Run Devil Run.’
The same year YG Entertainment’s girl group 2NE1 won the Song Of The Year grand prize with the chart-bursting track ‘I Am The Best.‘ Ever since many girl groups including TWICE and BLACKPINK have managed to mark their presence in the industry but they couldn’t win the grand prizes.

Apart from NewJeans, their label mate BTS won their sixth grand prize, making them the only group and only Asian act to win 74 awards at MAMA, in the show’s history. Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN took home the trophy of the Album Of The Year with their ‘Super’ release FML.
