April 19, 2022 – The NBA has officially imposed Kyrie Irving a $50,000 fine after profanity to the fans during game 1 of Boston Celtics versus Brooklyn Nets.
Kyrie already had enough of the heckling and trash-talking Boston fans for a long time now. On April 17, during the Celtics and Nets playoff matchup in the first round, Kyrie threw a “double middle finger” curse towards the stands. The act of profanity was a result of fans behind Irving talking a lot of trash. This was shown on live tv where fans were also seen to have sensed they’ve gotten into Kyrie’s nerves.

It was uncalled for and the rulebook says, players are not allowed to swear, cuss, and use profanity towards an official, another player, or a fan. But, to be fair, we cannot blame Kyrie for his reactions. Everybody knows how intense the playoffs can get.
“Somebody [may] say something to get you to react. NBA crowds in the playoffs tend to try to pick at players, especially ones that played for their team previously. We all understand that stuff. Kyrie’s reaction was his reaction. We are all still behind that, I feel exactly what he said. The same energy they are giving off to him, he’s gonna give it right back. He played that way. I think it’s all in the game.”
-Kevin Durant’s reflection on Kyrie’s reaction
Kyrie played for Boston from 2017 to 2019 before he signed with Brooklyn alongside Kevin Durant. The fans who boo Uncle Drew every time he steps on TD Garden were the same fans who rooted for him when he was with the Celtics.

In their first-round matchup, the C’s managed to take game 1 with a buzzer-beater layup from Jayson Tatum. Their next bout will be on Wednesday, April 20. This will be an exciting series in which the Nets could potentially hand the 2nd seeded Celtics a first-round upset.
