Kevin Durant injures his right knee in the game against the Miami Heat; Will KD recover?

Brooklyn Nets’ superstar forward, Kevin Durant, was ruled out during the game against the Miami Heat yesterday. After a collision with Jimmy Butler in the third quarter, Durant fell to the floor and grabbed onto his knees. He was then escorted off the court and the Brooklyn Nets ruled him out due to a “knee injury”.

Although the Nets won the game against the Heat, 102-101, the team is in shambles since their best player will probably be sidelined regardless of the magnitude of his injuries. The Nets, a team who had a rough start of the season, are having quite a great run with their latest 12-game win streak from December 8, 2022, to January 3, 2023. Durant left the game with 17 points while Kyrie Irving carried the Nets team by putting up 29 points in 40 minutes. Brooklyn Nets are currently 27-13 and are the second-best team in the East behind the Boston Celtics. Watch the full sequence in this clip by ESPN:

Kevin Durant’s injury history

  • At around the same time last year, the 2013 MVP suffered an MCL injury which forced him to miss 21 games. He returned five weeks later (March) and still lead the Nets to the playoffs but it was rather a disappointing run after getting swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round.

  • But, that sprained MCL in his left knee wasn’t the worst injury KD suffered. Back in the 2019 NBA Finals, KD ruptured his right Achilles tendon in game 5. Durant’s absence became a great loss for the Warriors who eventually lost to the Raptors. After tearing his Achilles, Durant missed the entire 2019-2020 season.
  • Unfortunately, at a time when he is needed most by his team, KD gets injured in his right knee. Truthfully, the “Slim Reaper” anchors the Nets’ offense with his 30-point-per-game average this season. Brooklyn is also looking great now that Kyrie, KD, and Ben Simmons are playing well together.
OTHER NEWS: NBA: Who’s going to be the 2023 All-Star captains?
  • The 10-time NBA All-Star will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine his situation. For now, Brooklyn must continue their hot start to 2023 and eventually reach the playoffs again. Kyrie Irving must bear the responsibility to lead the team without KD.
  • Throughout his career, Kevin Durant missed a total of 256 games. Most of it was a result of missing the whole 2019-2020 season plus the earlier part of the 2020-2021 season.

He has recovered from a torn Achilles so it wouldn’t be surprising if Durant recovers from an injured knee. We will just have to wait for the MRI result next week.
