After several release date pushbacks, Aquaman 2, aka Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, will finally hit the big screens on December 20, 2023. But just like one of its lead stars, Amber Heard, who plays the role of Mera, the movie has been surrounded by controversies, thanks to the actress’ defamation trial with her former husband, Johnny Depp. And the latest, the film’s key player, Jason Momoa, allegedly wanted Heard fired and showed up on set drunk.
So, how true is this claim? Read on and explore the Aquaman 2 controversies.
Jason Momoa Allegedly Wants Amber Heard Fired from Aquaman 2
The claim came from the documents from the Depp-Heard defamation trial, made by the actress’ therapist, Dr. Draw Hughs. Depp’s fans reportedly paid the court fees to release the controversial documents, and there, several revelations were made about Momoa, director James Wan, and even Heard’s former lover, Elon Musk.
But amongst the many claims that surprised many was about the Game of Thrones star. The raw notes revealed, via Variety, that an intoxicated Momoa showed up on set dressed like Depp, complete with all the rings, wanting Heard fired.
“Jason said he wanted me fired,” it read. “Jason drunk — late on set. Dressing like Johnny. Has all the rings, too.”
This shocks many, as the actor reportedly fought to keep Heard in Aquaman 2 amid the campaigns to replace her as Mera with another actress amid her highly publicized trial with Depp. Vanity Fair even reported that Momoa and Wan were both “committed to her and “adamant” that she stayed in the film.

So far, Momoa has yet to break his silence on the issue, but knowing he’s known to be the Mr. Nice Guy, many want to believe the claim isn’t valid. Some can’t even think of why he would wish Heard to be fired from the movie, though there were fears that the bad publicity surrounding her might badly affect the sequel. Anyhow, it can’t be denied that fans are quite divided by this new claim, as it came from Heard herself, though many show support for Momoa.
Aquaman 2 Controversy Explained
Most of the controversies surrounding Aquaman 2 are about Heard, and it all started when her defamation trial with Depp began. Then, rumors started to swirl that the 37-year-old star would be fired from the film. And though it didn’t happen, she was almost let go, not because of her case but because of her alleged lack of chemistry with Momoa. This matter even ended up with former DC film boss Walter Hamada testifying about the chemistry issue in court.
This is despicable.
Elon Musk threatened Warner Bros to burn their house down, to force them to keep Amber Heard in Aquaman 2.
Disgusting (and possibly illegal) behavior from both her and him.

However, another source tried to refute the claim, revealing Heard did a chemistry test with Momoa and beat out other actresses who did the same. But it’s good to note that she didn’t get fired, though some believed that it might have something to do with her ex, Musk, who threatened to do some action against Warner Bros. if it didn’t bring Heard back to Aquaman 2. But despite all these issues about the film, a source said it’s never in trouble.
Refuting the Claim Surrounding Jason Momoa
A DC spokesperson has already refused the claim about Momoa, stressing the 44-year-old was always professional when he appeared on the set of Aquaman 2. Sure, though he would have a beer occasionally, he never showed up drunk, let alone dressed as Depp. He was and is often known for wearing Bohemian clothes.
An insider on the movie set in London in 2021 also revealed that Heard and Momoa were getting along and joking.

It looks like it’s really time for the franchise to let go of Heard—again, not because of her issues but because her time as Mera has ended. Wan said he felt he had already told Arthur (Momoa) and Mera’s story, so he could now focus on other characters.
Also, addressing the issue, though Momoa may influence the franchise by playing the lead role of Aquaman and making it iconic, not to mention earning millions of dollars at the box office, he is never involved in the film’s decision-making. So, whether he dressed up as Depp and wanted to fire Heard, it would never happen until the management wanted to do so.
