In a year since their debut, NewJeans may have taken the 4th gen girl group title right away. Two music award shows recently concluded over the last week, and the girl group made history for both. The ADOR and HYBE Labels’ girl group received notable awards despite being one of the youngest K-pop groups in the industry. After winning back-to-back awards in MAMA and MMA 2023, does this give them the girl group title for this generation? Here’s what we have about that.
Can The Girl Group Take Home The Title?
This title is undoubtedly debatable for now, but NewJeans shows they can be the 4th gen girl group. Let’s take a look back at the career of NewJeans, starting with their single debut, Attention, in July 2022. Even as a newly debuted group and track, it quickly made its way as their first number-one song in South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart (previously known as Gaon Digital Chart).
This is followed by two other singles that took social media by storm: Hype Boy and Cookie. Their first EP, released in August 2022, consists of these three tracks plus their ballad song, Hurt. The Hype Boy choreography had everyone dancing to its beat, from K-pop idols to dancers and TikTok users. Although these tracks did not win any trophy last year, their following albums bagged more than we can imagine.

By January 2023, their first single album, OMG, with two tracks, OMG and Ditto. NewJeans again took over social media with the success of OMG and NGL, and the lyrics “Oh my, Oh my God” were stuck in our heads. Meanwhile, Ditto has been widespread, especially on the charts. It became the longest-running number-one track in the Circle Digital Chart for 13 weeks and became NewJeans’ gateway to the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart.
The girl group released their second EP, Get Up, to keep their streak going. It peaked first on the US Billboard 200, and their title track, Super Shy, charted on the US Billboard 200 (#2), US Billboard Hot 100, and the UK Singles Chart.

- If all these song recognition and popularity aren’t enough, then we don’t know what else to show you. Sure, it’s evident how NewJeans rocked the K-pop industry globally with their tracks, concepts, music videos, and adorable members. But, of course, we should also recognize how big their name is in their homeland, South Korea. It’s obvious how their songs had an impact, and the girl group may have cemented their reputation already in their early year after debut.
NewJeans do have the potential to be THE 4th gen girl group, but probably not now. The Nation’s Girl Group may be a possible title in the future if they consistently release singles and albums that would break the charts and effortlessly make South Korea and the globe fall in love with the members’ charms and personalities. The group still has a lot of competition for titles, too, like aespa, ITZY, IVE, and LE SSERAFIM, among other fourth-gen groups that continuously slay and deliver with every release they make.
NewJeans And All Music Awards Show Trophies
In the last 2023 Mnet Asian Music Awards, NewJeans took home their first (and second) Daesang during the second day of the music award show. They won the Artist Of The Year and Song Of The Year for Ditto. Moreover, the girl group also bagged trophies for Best Female Group and Best Dance Performance (Female Group).
- Unfortunately, the girl group could not perform and receive their awards at the 2023 MAMA Awards. But, of course, their fans, BUNNIES, didn’t fail to celebrate the massive success in their career. They deserved the love and support from their fandom and those who appreciate their music!
NewJeans may not be present at the 2023 MAMA, but they sure slayed the stage of the Melon Music Awards 2023. Undoubtedly, the girl group owns the night after bagging the most awards: five in total. The MMA 2023 criteria involve online voting, digital sales, and judges’ scores.

Once again, NewJeans received two Daesangs for Artist Of The Year and Song Of The Year for Ditto. Aside from that, the group also earned their Bonsang for belonging to the Top 10 Artists. Two more trophies include the Millions Top 10 and Best Female Group. Their photo holding their trophies is such a lovely sight, as each member has an MMA 2023 trophy. It reminds us of SNSD holding their awards way back; time flies really fast.
