Harry Potter has always been tied to J.K. Rowling in whatever way it happens. In this upcoming Hogwarts Legacy from Portkey Games, this is an inevitable question. If you’re an avid Potterhead, we’re sure you want to try the Harry Potter game to be released next year. Although there’s the lingering thought, is Hogwarts Legacy profitable for J.K. Rowling?
Will J.K. Rowling profit from Hogwarts Legacy?
We’ll go straight to the point, yes. Rowling owns the intellectual property (IP) of Harry Potter, whether what happens. As long as she owns the IP of Potter, she profits from it.
- We may have no clue how much, but knowing that she profits from any Harry Potter-attached game or movie, it’s disappointing.
- However, the team behind the development of the game repetitively states that J.K. Rowling has no direct involvement in the production, narration, or anything. They just took the wizarding world and the lore it encompasses.
- The new story in the game is in no way from the original author of the HP books. Portkey Games cleared that Rowling is aware of and supports their vision of Hogwarts Legacy.
- Frustrating, we know, but if you choose to boycott the game, either way, the author profits. Whether you purchase or not, the game flops or not, she gets something out of it.
Hogwarts Legacy on Rowling’s involvement
You now have the answer about J.K. Rowling’s profits in the upcoming open-world game. The developers added a question on their Frequently Asked Questions page about J.K. Rowling’s involvement in the game’s development and story.

Rowling is not involved in the creation of the game, but as creator of the wizarding world and one of the world’s greatest storytellers, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World. This is not a new story from J.K. Rowling, however, we have collaborated closely with her team on all aspects of the game to ensure it remains in line with the magical experiences fans expect.”
- Since the game sets in the year of 1800s, most of your loved HP characters would not be seen in Hogwarts Legacy. It brings a new experience to those who purchased or plan to buy the game.
- If you’ll ask us about buying the game, probably be a no. But then again, it’s your choice still, if you think Hogwarts Legacy would be a great game, then do yourselves a favor and play it when it releases.
The issue with J.K. Rowling
If you came here not knowing about the issue of the Harry Potter original author, then here’s a quick run-through. While Hogwarts has been known to be a place full of acceptance, love, and warm welcome, this is not what fans expected from its author.
- The issue started on June 6, 2020, after the famed author quote-retweeted and laid out her opinion about the article which used “people who menstruate” rather than women.

- The author created a thread to write her views in a more detailed manner. She adds this specific sentence, “I’d march with you if you were discriminated against based on being trans,” which garnered a lot more backlash. Some replies say why did she use the word ‘if’ when in fact, the trans community faces discrimination and disrespect.
I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.

- The author then wrote a lengthy post a few days later about her thoughts on the trans issue stemming from being a survivor of abuse and her concerns about single-sex spaces. You may read more on her website.
