The long-running hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy ended its 19th season with an emotional departure. The main character in the series and the woman behind its success Meredith Grey (portrayed by actress Ellen Pompeo), is finally leaving the Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. Pompeo informed that she will be parting ways with ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy last year. And while it’s saddening to see her go, is Grey’s Anatomy also coming to an end or will it continue without Meredith Grey? Will we see it go for another season, perhaps season 20?
Who is Meredith Grey?
Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo is a fictional character and the main protagonist in the American medical drama television series “Grey’s Anatomy”. Meredith is a talented and ambitious surgical resident who works at Seattle Grace Hospital (later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital) in Seattle, Washington. She is the daughter of a world-renowned surgeon, Ellis Grey, and initially struggles to establish her own identity in the medical field while dealing with personal issues, including the strained relationship with her mother and complicated love life.
Over the course of the series, Meredith evolves into a skilled surgeon, teacher, and mentor, eventually becoming the head of general surgery at the hospital. She also faces a series of personal challenges, including the loss of loved ones, infertility, and the adoption of children. Meredith is a beloved and iconic character on the show and has been featured in every season of “Grey’s Anatomy” since its premiere in 2005.
Is Grey’s Anatomy canceled?
Since season 19 has ended, ABC (American Broadcasting Channel) hasn’t made any announcement about the show’s future. They haven’t ordered for season 20 yet nor have they decided to completely close the books for the doctors, nurses, and patients of the Sloan-Grey Memorial Hospital.
Even though Grey’s Anatomy is ABC’s most prominent TV show and one of its highest-rated projects, there’s no denying that it’s getting fewer and fewer viewers every season. This year, the show’s viewership went down by 14.5%. However, it is still on top of ABC’s list of TV shows, alongside the likes of The Rookie, The Conners, Abbott Elementary, and Station 19. But, with the departure of Pompeo, things might just get more difficult for the producers. In Pompeo’s own words, “Trying to reinvent the show and continually trying to reinvent the show is the challenge at this point”.
Why did Ellen Pompeo leave Grey’s Anatomy?
Ellen Pompeo posted on the Instagram way back on November 17, 2022, about her planned departure from Grey’s Anatomy. Pompeo, who has played the role of Meredith Gray for almost 2 decades has decided to venture into other projects, one of which is her tie-up with Hulu. She has also explained why she left the TV series during an interview with Drew Barrymore in The Drew Barrymore Show.
“I’m 53. My brain is like scrambled eggs,” the actress explained. “I gotta do something new or I’m literally gonna turn into like, you can’t do the New York Times crossword puzzle every single day. I mean, 19 years, that’s more than people keep their kids in their house, like people keep their kids in their house until they’re 18 and then they send them off to college. So this is like me like going away to college.”‘
