The Irregular at Magic Highschool: Southern Sea Arc’s final chapter out

Nobu Aonagi’s Mahoka Koko No Rettosei: Nanaki Sojo Hen (also titled The Irregular at Magic High School: South Sea Riots Arc) published its final manga chapter last Friday. The manga adapted the Nanaki Sojo Hen (South Sea Riots Arc) which follows the story from the 20th light novel of the same name. This final chapter was published in Kadokawa’s monthly comic, Dengeki Daioh in its October Issue. The manga will release its third and final collected volume bundle starting October 10th.

The Irregular at Magic High School’s adaptation lineup is no joke. With multiple adaptations of the light novel into different Manga publications by multiple authors. The light novel itself has two sequels and multiple spin-offs. Almost every alternate of the arcs in the light novel has inspired its own separate Manga spin-off. We have 2 anime seasons with a spin-off and a tv special, and a movie to add to the ginormous list of adapting The Irregular at Magic High School. Honestly, it should be rather called The Irregular at Numbered Adaptations!

What’s Up With Multiple Publications For Each Different Arc of The Irregular At Magic High School?

The Irregular at Magic High School

To not confuse the readers, it is first a Japanese light novel series and then multiple series of manga adaptations. Then Anime adaptation.

  • Unlike typical Manga works which are often original, this series is actually an adaptation of a light novel. Hence, different publications and a variety of artists work on the various adaptations of different arcs.
  • For example, Nobu Aonagi, who has drawn the Nanaki Sojo Hen arc has actually made a return to the world of Irregular at Magic High School. He previously also drew Mahoka Koko No Rettosei Sutiipurucheesu-hen, (literally translating to Steeplechase arc, yeah you reddu thatto righto!)

  • This was launched in the monthly comic Dengeki Daioh in March 2019 and ended in November 2020. Nobu Aonagi adapted the manga arc of the Southern Sea Riots on February 2021.
  • After enough has been compiled, Kadokawa takes charge by publishing multiple manga chapters in a book volume bundle. Kadokawa released the manga’s second volume bundle on March 10.

More on The Light Novel

The Irregular at Magic High School

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei translated literally as “The Poor Performing Student of A Magic High School” is also titled “The Irregular At Magic High School” (which is pretty cool really.)  Ishida Kana takes over the illustrations and is written by Sato Tsutomu while ASCII Media Works publish it under their Dengeki Bunko label.

Satou’s The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahoka Koko No Rettosei) was launched in 2008 and ended in September 2020. He had published his 32nd volume ending the series. Two sequels followed in October 2020 and again another in January 2021. To make it more complicated, each of the novels’ arcs takes off spin-off adaptations of their own. One example, Yu Mori’s Honor Student at Magic High School spin-off manga.

Concluding

Aniplex of America licensed the 2014 anime adaptation and describes the story:

“Magic–A century has passed since this concept has been recognized as a formal technology instead of the product of the occult or folklore. The season is spring and it is time for a brand new school year. The National Magic University First Affiliate High School, A.K.A Magic High School divides the students into two distinct groups according to their academic performances. The “Bloom,” who demonstrate the highest grades and are enrolled in the “First Course,” and the “Weed,” who have poor academic records and are enrolled in the “Second Course.”

This spring, a very peculiar brother and sister enroll as new students. The brother is an underachiever with some deficiencies and enrolls as a “Weed,” while his younger sister is an honor student, who enrolls as a “Bloom.” The brother, with a somewhat philosophical expression, and the younger sister hold feelings a little stronger than sibling love for him. Ever since these two have entered through the gates of this prestigious school, the calm campus was beginning to change…”
