IPL 2022: BCCI Reveals The New Unique Format

IPL is one of the most interesting cricket tournament in the world. It will be held between March 26 and May 29. With the introduction of two new teams in the tournament, BCCI revealed the new format for the IPL 2022 and it seems to be interesting and unique.

IPL 2022 will be played in a totally new format.

There is a total of 10 teams in IPL 2022. The 10 teams are divided into two groups – A and B. The two groups are based on a seeding system determined by the number of IPL titles won or finals played by each team. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) headline Group A, four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) headline Group B.

  • Each of the ten teams will play 14 matches each during the league stage. Each team will play twice against the teams in their group, and against the team in the same row as the other group. They will play once against the remaining four teams.
  • The entire league stage of the IPL 2022 will be staged in four prominent cricket grounds of Maharashtra namely – Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and MCA International Stadium in Pune.

The home-and-away formula will not be relevant this season though, because the IPL has decided to restrict the league phase to four venues.

To understand the new format here is an example for you.

  • In Group A, MI will play 2 matches each against KKR, RR, DC, LSG. MI will also play 2 matches against CSK and 1 match each against other teams in Group B.
  • Similarly, in Group B, RCB will play 2 matches against CSK, SRH, PBKS, and GT. RCB will also play 2 matches against RR and 1 match each against other teams in Group A.
