Karla Joy Treadway trends with I'm Canadian Instagram video highlighting political climate of Canada

Digital Marketing and Business Coach Karla Joy Treadway is going viral on Instagram with her video highlighting the political climate of Canada.

In her short video, she mentions six to seven current events that have raised concerns among citizens regarding their country. Let’s take a closer look at the video and people’s reactions to it.

Karla Joy Treadway’s ‘I’m Canadian’ video goes viral

In the past month, a new trend has been spreading on social media where people introduce themselves with a particular title and details the general habits and common anecdotes surrounding it.

For example, a reading enthusiast on BookTok or Bookstagram would introduce themselves as “Hi, I’m a reader,” before proceeding to share how they purchase more books than they could read and so on.

Treadway also participated in this trend by making a Canadian version. In the viral clip she cheerfully introduces herself as ‘Hi, I am Canadian’ and shares various current events related to the country’s drug laws, Online Streaming Act, Assistant Dying Policy, treatment and condition of Press, Journalism, and more.

Instagram Video Breakdown

Treadway begins the video by sharing that it might be difficult to get all the necessary nutrients in Canada but you can receive 2.5 grams of hard drugs. This refers to the government’s temporary legalization of hard drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, and opioids in small degrees.

  • This policy is currently limited to the province of British Columbia as an attempt to treat addiction as a medical issue rather than a criminal. The government has continued to criminalize selling and smuggling of drugs.
  • However, if they encounter someone holding a small quantity of them for personal use then the Government would provide them with medical alternatives to alleviate the addiction than charging them.

Online News and Streaming Acts

She continues the video by sharing the government’s policies towards independent media outlets and journalists. She also mentions that the government is considering taking down podcasts and Netflix shows that are against national sentiments.

  • This refers to the Online News Act and Online Streaming Act. The News Act (Bill C-18) aims to let an eligible news business initiate mandatory bargaining with a digital news intermediary such as Google and Meta.
  • In response to this act, Google and Meta platforms including Facebook and Instagram stopped hosting and producing news content related to Canada to relieve their obligations. They stated that the bill exposes them to uncapped financial liability.
  • The Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) wishes to amend the Broadcasting Act to prioritize Canadians’ needs and interest in digital media. This bill would allow the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), to regulate and condition digital media content.

Assisted Dying Policy

Karla Joy Treadway further includes a viral Tweet from 2023 where a Canadian citizen shared how they received dozens of calls from Assisted Dying Help but couldn’t get an appointment to meet health care professionals.

  • The Tweet brought the Canadian Medical Assisted Dying Policy (MAiD) into global coverage after it went viral on social media. The country’s growing amendments providing euthanasia for people suffering from lifelong physical health issues are being discussed as a concerning trend.
  • In December 2023, the New York Times covered how the cities are divided over a law that will provide the facility to people suffering from mental health issues as well. Many believe that this encourages citizens to choose death over medical assistance.

Fossil fuels and freedom of the press

Treadway lastly talks about the country’s plan to continue producing non-renewable energy in the upcoming years. She attaches a statistics report from 2012 mentioning that 47% of Canadian households use natural gas as their main heating fuel.

  • However, a decade later these statistics have greatly changed. While Canada remains one of the top fossil fuel-producing countries; its citizens majorly (60%, as per CER’s 2019 data) rely on hydroelectricity.
  • She finally mentions the incident of Rebel News journalist David Menzies, who was arrested on January 8, 2024, for trying to question Freeland about the Canadian government’s decision to exclude the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from the designated terrorist entity list.

Netizens reactions

Karla Joy Treadway’s video is no longer available on her official handles but many netizens have shared the clip on social media platforms. Some have attached their claims that Canada is becoming a communist and fascist country under the government of PM Justin Trudeau to the clip.

  • Many netizens have also tagged opposition and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the video who has remained vocal against many of the above-mentioned policies.
  • Due to the recent events many Canadian netizens have begun to criticize Trudeau’s government and demand that federal elections should be hosted in 2024 instead of 2025.
  • It seems that netizens will come across many political news, data, and opinions in 2024 as Canada prepares for its 2025 elections and several global nations including the United States host their elections in 2024.
