How did Netflix Crew survive Tiger Sharks’ attack?

The crew of David Attenborough’s critically acclaimed new documentary series faced the ill effects of climate change on the environment. Netflix’s Our Planet 2, which continues the journey of capturing the migration and distress in the wildlife, was shot at the risk of the crew’s life as two hungry tiger sharks attacked them.

According to the series producer Huw Cordey, the camera crew was preparing to shoot an underwater sequence in Hawaii when a 15-foot-long tiger shark attacked them. They had to rush toward land to survive. The original idea was to capture the sharks waiting in the shallows of Laysan, but the crew on inflatable boats had to rush ashore when the tiger sharks attacked them.

How did Netflix’s Our Planet 2 crew survive the tiger sharks’ attack?

The crew of the Netflix documentary Our Planet 2 was on a 6-day filming trip to Laysan, a remote island on the northwestern front of Hawaii. They were setting up on inflatable boats to capture underwater scenes of Laysan albatross when they came face-to-face with tiger sharks.

• “On the first day when the tiger sharks were around, our camera crew got into inflatable boats, but the sharks attacked them,” producer Cordey said to Forbes—further comparing the panicking scene with horror sequences from the disaster film Jaws. “The crew panicked and rushed. They made an emergency landing on the shore, and they couldn’t get any underwater shots,” Cordey added.

Toby Nowlan, the director of the series narrated by the biologist David Attenborough also talked about the life-threatening incident while appearing for an interview with the Radio Times. “This ‘v’ of water streamlined towards us, and the tiger shark leaped at the boat, taking bites of the boat,” he said.

• “The crew was trying to get away from it, but the tiger shark continued the attack. It was the second attack on us from the sharks, and it was horrific,” he shared further, adding that the crew was some hundred feet away from the shore, so they managed to escape the tiger sharks and get the boats onto the land.
• The director Nowlan described sharks’ behavior as ‘unusual’ and shared that they are likely to have been hungry and deprived of natural food, making them attack anything they stumbled across in the water.
