Honkai: Star Rail is the newest turn-based RPG from HoYoverse, the same developers of the hit gacha game Genshin Impact. After releasing on April 26, 2023, many players have been enjoying the combat system in Star Rail. The game features a turn-based combat system, but you can cast your characters’ Ultimate abilities any time in a fight. However, some Trailblazers wonder if you can cancel your Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail.
Can you cancel your Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail?
In Honkai: Star Rail, your main character has a Stellaron inside them that allows them to have superior combat abilities. Unlike in Genshin Impact, you and the enemy team take turns attacking each other. The order is usually based on the SPD stat. Characters with the highest SPD stat go first, and in some cases, these characters can attack twice depending on their SPD stat.

When a character’s Ultimate ability is charged, you can cast this anytime in Honkai: Star Rail. But what happens if you don’t want to cast the Ultimate anymore? Can you cancel it and save your character’s Ultimate for later?
The Ultimate ability cannot be canceled as soon as you click on it
Unfortunately, you cannot cancel your Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail. The Ultimate ability is queued as soon as you activate it, and there is no way to cancel this. This is a problem discussed by players in the game’s official subreddit. According to u/Resh_IX, a Redditor who managed to play during Star Rail’s closed beta, they find it odd how you can’t cancel the Ultimate.
Another Redditor also shared that this is one of the things they don’t like in Honkai: Star Rail.
As of writing, there is no word yet on whether this can get changed in the game’s next updates. Players should be able to cancel casting an Ultimate since they can be used later in a battle.
- This is especially useful for characters whose Ultimate abilities allow them to heal their allies. They can use it effectively by choosing to cast the heal later in the battle. One character who can heal the entire party with their Ultimate is Bailu, a five-star Lightning character obtainable from the Standard Warp.
Players can call on HoYoverse to include this feature
Not being able to cancel your Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail is not a lost cause for Trailblazers. HoYoverse is conducting surveys in exchange for in-game rewards like Credits and upgrade materials. At the end of the survey, you can include other comments or suggestions on how the developers can improve the game.
If many players ask HoYoverse to include an option to cancel your Ultimate as soon as it’s cast, there is a high chance that they will consider this suggestion. This feature may be included in future patches to improve ‘Quality of Life’ in Honkai: Star Rail.
A brief overview of the combat system in Honkai: Star Rail
Gamers who have played games with turn-based mechanics may already be familiar with Honkai: Star Rail’s combat system. However, it might be overwhelming for other gamers whose first experience with turn-based combat is Star Rail.
- The game features a semi-open world you can explore freely. You can run into enemies in some places, and as you get closer to them, you can see their Elemental weaknesses. This already gives you an idea of what Elements will work best against them.
Ambush or get ambushed
Players can either ambush or get ambushed. When you get close to an enemy, a question mark briefly appears on their character. If it turns into an exclamation point and you don’t attack them in time, your team will get ambushed.

It’s crucial to ambush the enemy first since this will determine who gets the first turn in fights. Furthermore, you can inflict significant damage on the enemy team using a character whose Element is their weakness.
Order and how to charge your Ultimate skill
As mentioned earlier, whoever ambushes the other will get the first turn in a fight. The order is also determined by the SPD stat of the characters, meaning whoever has the highest SPD stat goes first. You can also look at the character icons on the upper left side of your screen to see who will perform an Action next.
To charge your Ultimate skill in Honkai: Star Rail, you need enough Energy to cast it. Like Genshin Impact, your Ultimate skill is charged over time as you attack or get attacked by the enemy team. When the Ultimate icon is filled, you can click on it and perform the ability even if it’s not your turn.
Be sure to choose the right moment to cast your Ultimate! Since you can’t cancel it once it’s cast, you must be strategic. Another thing you cannot do in Honkai: Star Rail is using Consumables in a battle to either regain your party’s HP or give them a buff.
We hope this guide helped answer whether or not you can cancel an Ultimate in Honkai: Star Rail. If you have other questions about how the game’s combat system works, feel free to leave them in the comments below. For more content, stay with us, here at Spiel Times.
