Heroes of Newerth Officially Shuts Down After 12 Years

Today, June 20, 2022, will mark the day that one of the most known multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA), Heroes of Newerth (HoN), is officially shutting its doors to its fans after 12 long years.

HoN came into fruition on May 12, 2010, and was known to rival two of the most popular MOBAs of the decade – Riot’s League of Legends and Valve’s Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2). Last year, HoN’s developers, Frostburn Studios, announced that the long-running 5v5 online game will be closing its servers officially after entertaining its players for more than a decade.

The Rise and Fall of Heroes of Newerth

HoN started strong early in its career. It was followed by a huge fanbase and the game itself was already making a name in the MOBA genre. It even held a lot of professional games and housed notable pro players like Johan “N0tail” Sundstein (DotA 2 The International Champion, Team OG) and Tal “Fly” Azik (former DotA 2 Major Champion). While these guys were known to be exceptional HoN players, it wasn’t long until they changed their path and moved to a bigger and brighter spotlight in DotA 2.

Although it breaks most fans that Heroes of Newerth is finally coming to an end, its demise was already inevitable. Yes, it is true that HoN had its moments and it is also true that it had strong community support during its peak.

But, its competitors quickly outmaneuvered HoN with impeccable marketing strategies. HoN pro players as well as most of its users then decided to move on. Despite Frostburn Studios trying their best to win the trust of their players back, the DotA 2 was already becoming the golden standard of the MOBA genre.

Previously, the developers gave a final hoorah for HoN. To celebrate the game, a special Farewell Event took place from December 20, 2021, to February 19, 2022. With the conclusion of the event, players will no longer be able to bid goodbye to their once favorite characters. Everything will be inaccessible including its servers, website, online services, and anything else not mentioned.

Today, HoN and its legendary fallen heroes will forever be gone into the void. Although they could be gone forever, they will be never forgotten in the hearts of many.

Amidst this unfortunate happening, DotA 2 and League of Legends are still going strong. Players who once played Heroes of Newerth could find a new home in the two games stated and could reunite with others players, too!
