HBO’s The Idol Season Finale Breakdown
The final episode of HBO’s The Idol S01 opened with Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) collaborating with musician Mike Dean on a song. The lyrics reveal the toll Tedros‘ (The Weeknd) cocaine addiction had taken on him.Â
Their relationship comes to a shocking end when Jocelyn discovers Tedros and her backup dancer, Dyanne’s (Jennie Kim) conspiracy against her to steal her single and invade her personal life.Â
In retaliation, Jocelyn sleeps with her ex-boyfriend while Tedros listens to them making love outside the door. Later, Jocelyn invites her new followers to be her opening act for an upcoming tour. Tedros’ frustration grows as Jocelyn steals his own cult out from under him.
Amidst all this chaos, Tedros has a secretive conversation with Xander (Troye Sivan) about a potential alliance against Jocelyn. As she prepares for an important meeting with a music executive, Leila (Rachel Sennott) tells her about a rape accusation at Jocelyn’s party.Â
Final moments of the ending explained
As the episode nears its end, Dyanne is defeated as Nikki refuses to release her single for ‘undisclosed legal reasons,’ which means it was Jocelyn’s act. Six weeks later, Jocelyn is about to perform at LA’s SoFi Stadium, where she reunites with Tedros.Â

As the pair embrace each other, Tedros notices that Joceyln’s infamous hairbrush, which her mom used to beat her with, looks new. This is when he realizes that her stories about her mother are not true.Â
Finally, Jocelyn brings Tedros onstage and introduces him to her fans as the love of her life. The episode ends with Tedros accepting defeat as Jocelyn tells him, “You’re mine forever. Now, go stand over there.”
Controversy surrounding the show
The Idol’s controversies precede its reputation, dating to months before its premiere. In March, Rolling Stone magazine published an article that exposed the show’s tumultuous production and toxic work environment.
Furthermore, all five episodes of The Idol have received poor ratings and reviews from both critics and audiences alike. The general consensus is that the show overuses sick and twisted graphic sex scenes without adding much value to the story.Â
Will The Idol get a second season?
All the factors discussed above raise the question of whether The Idol will return for a second season. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Jocelyn’s manager, Destiny, revealed in an interview that the show was initially intended to be an ongoing series.Â
Although nothing is confirmed, she mentioned that HBO seemed pleased with the show’s performance. However, conflicting reports and the unexpected conclusion of the first season, with just five episodes instead of six, have left fans uncertain about the future of The Idol.
