Free-to-play games are rare in today’s gaming universe, but not as rare as one might think. Some great games are free-to-play, such as Fortnite, Destiny 2, Call of Duty: Warzone, and the recently released Halo Infinite. It has been one way to reach a large audience by removing the entry barrier.
However, developers also need to generate revenue from the games they develop, at least to recover the costs of production. This is being pursued by developers through sin-game store purchases that include microtransactions on cosmetics, weapons, and other items.
Item Shop Boycott
- Halo Infinite has come under fire for this very reason. Halo Infinite is the first free-to-play game in the Halo series, and there have been many things that fans have been enjoying.
- The items in the in-game shop are expensive and have led to dissatisfaction among fans. In response, players have decided to boycott all purchases in-game.
- Reddit user GoobyOfPls has put out a post asking players to not buy shop items in-game. They call the prices “utterly ridiculous” and a “blatant smack in the face to those who were told all event armor pieces/sets would be completely free.”
- He goes on to say that the fact that a $15 sword belt can only be used for one armor core. This thereby limits its usability, justifies the need to boycott the items shop.
Players Call for Price Adjustments
- Many fans have agreed with GobbyOfPls, as there is more than $35 of premium event gear in the store.
- Recently, it was estimated that around $1000 would have to be spent if one wanted to purchase all Halo Infinite Season 1 premium cosmetics from the shop. With this, the outrage will surely happen sooner or later.
- Players hope that the devs will adjust prices to make it more feasible for them to access the items, while developer 343 Industries will also need to maintain revenues. We will have to wait and see if the boycott is a success and if it is, how the developers respond.
