There are many key figures in God of War: Ragnarok, especially because it centers around Norse mythology. Although this character was introduced in the previous God of War game, some players may still have a hard time remembering them. Keep on reading below to know who is Jormungandr in the world of God of War: Ragnarok.
Who is Jormungandr?
In God of War (2018), we were introduced to Jormungandr’s character as the World Serpent. His first meeting with Kratos and Atreus was in the Lake of Nine. He tried talking to Kratos and Atreus but to no avail since they couldn’t understand him.Ā Ā
- He isnāt just simply a snake though, he is The Snake. Why so? Heās a Giant and a God, and Jormungandr looks hugely scary up front though. His name in Norse mythology literally translates to “huge monster”

- Is he alive? Of course, he is, and weāll probably see him face his arch-rival in God of War: Ragnarok. Now youāre asking who? The one and only God of Thunder, Thor
- Jormungandr despises Thor and Odin for massacring his race, the Giants, which led to their extinction
- Just a piece of information for you, Jormungandr is a child of Loki and Angrboda. He has two more siblings, Hel and Fenrir. Also, we can say that Jormungandr is one of the most powerful in the Nine Realms. His strength would probably be equal to the strongest among the Aesir: Thor
In God of War (2018)
Freya tells the story of the World Serpent suddenly appearing in the Lake of Nine. It was through Mimir that players got to know what caused Jormungandr to appear in the lake
- Jormungandr fought a tough battle with Thor. Their battle was so intense that at one point, everyone across the Nine Realms could feel the power and strength of both of them
- In the prophecy of Ragnarok, Mimir says that it depicts Jormungandr and Thor fighting once more. During the fight, Thor will deliver a very powerful blow to Jormungandr which will break Yggdrasil, the Tree of Life
- Because of this, Jormungandr will be sent back in time before his birth. This explains why he mysteriously appeared at the Lake of Nine
- With the help of the World Serpent, Kratos and Atreus were able to reach the highest peak of Jotunheim. Here, they were able to spread Faye’s ashes, following her wish
- Jormungandr was actually hesitant to help Kratos and Atreus at first since he thought they were friends of Thor. But thankfully, Mimir clears things up
- He also played an important role in aiding Kratos in his battle against Thamur and Baldur

Jormungandr’s role in God of War: Ragnarok
In the latest installment of the God of War series, we get to meet with Jormungandr again. With the help of Sindri, one of the two dwarves who always help both Kratos and Atreus in any way they can, we are able to awaken Jormungandr from his slumber.
- As Atreus, we follow Sindri to where we can call for Jormungandr. This is because Atreus is in search of anyone who can help him know his future as a giant and as Loki
- Jormungandr simply tells Atreus: “Ironwood”
- After that, he goes back into the lake much to Atreus’ disappointment. At this point, he does not know what Ironwood is but further into the game, we’ll see him meet Angrboda and explore the realm of the Giants
Will Jormungandr finally defeat Thor in God of War: Ragnarok?

In the God of War games, the entire set-up is rather complicated. Considering that Jormungandr’s parents are Loki AKA Atreus and Angrboda in Norse mythology, that doesn’t seem to be the case yet in Ragnarok.
- It’s possible that this can be explained by the Tree of Life being splintered in Jormungandr’s fight against Thor. But will the fight happen if the prophecy of Ragnarok depicts Odin’s fall?
Now that we have a good look at who Odin and Thor are in God of War: Ragnarok, there are tons of possibilities as to what may happen between the World Serpent and the God of Thunder. Maybe this time, Jormungandr will aid Kratos if he faces off against Thor once more.
Will Jormungandr come out as the victor this time around?
