God of War: Ragnarok lets players wield three weapons when they play as Kratos. Although you do get to play as Atreus in some chapters, Kratos will be your go-to guy in most of the storyline in the game. As you journey through the Nine Realms, you will wield all kinds of weapons that serve their own purposes. Although there are only three weapons Kratos can use in God of War: Ragnarok, there’s still bound to be the best one you can use if you still want to bring out the god in Kratos.Â
Ranking the best weapons in God of War: Ragnarok
When you’re first starting God of War: Ragnarok, you can only wield two weapons: the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. Along the way, you might wonder what the Triangle button is for aside from recalling or unequipping your Leviathan Axe. That slot is actually for the Draupnir Spear which you can only get after completing the main chapter where Kratos goes to find The Lady in The Forge with Brok.
1. The Leviathan Axe is the best weapon in God of War: Ragnarok
A lot of you may not agree with this, but the Leviathan Axe is definitely our go-to weapon in the game. Sure, it may be slow and bulky to swing around compared to the Blades of Chaos or the Draupnir Spear. But it certainly gets the job done even when taking on multiple enemies all at once.
- Even though the Axe is not a new weapon in God of War, it still manages to be the best for us because of how satisfying it is to take enemies out with its powerful swings. It certainly brings us back to the previous games in the series when Kratos was at his peak of being the literal God of War.
- Yes, it mostly casts heavy attacks, but there’s just something about being able to deal a significant amount of damage on enemies that make the Axe the best weapon. One of our favorite things to do is throw the Leviathan Axe at an enemy and afterward, recall the weapon and watch as it hits them on its way back.
- It also has the most satisfying running attack out of the three weapons in God of War: Ragnarok. With the Leviathan Axe equipped, begin sprinting over at enemies and then press R2. It delivers a powerful Frost-infused attack that will catch your opponents off-guard.
- Overall, the satisfaction you get from using the Leviathan Axe to take out enemies is what makes it the best. Although your real enemy here is speed when using it, the Axe also
2. The Blades of Chaos are a close second
If you’re looking for a more AoE-focused weapon, the Blades of Chaos are your friends. Compared to the Leviathan Axe, gamers are more familiar with the Blades of Chaos since these are Kratos’ main weapons in the earlier titles. With this weapon, you are able to easily clear out enemy mobs in one sweep, unlike the Axe.Â
- The Blades of Chaos are our second option because of how weak they feel. You’ll definitely be exerting more effort when fighting enemies if you use the Blades of Chaos since its DMG isn’t too high. You still have to use it, especially when fighting Frost-infused enemies as you need its flames to unlock their health bars.
- Unfortunately for the Blades of Chaos, it doesn’t feel as powerful as it did in the previous game. Nonetheless, there are still moments when we like using the Blades of Chaos instead of the other weapons. 3. The Draupnir Spear feels too limited
If you want to bring out your inner Spartan, then the Draupnir Spear is the best weapon for you. However, it ranked last on our list because of how limited it is as a weapon. Never mind the fact that you will only acquire this weapon in a later part of the game. When you do get the chance to upgrade it, there isn’t much of a difference with how the Draupnir Spear once before leveling up.Â
- It’s fun to use the Draupnir Spear as both a melee and ranged weapon. It just lost us when the weapon wasn’t really offering something new every time we had the chance to upgrade it in God of War: Ragnarok.
- When you throw the Draupnir Spear, it leaves behind the spearhead which you can then detonate later on. We first see this in action after obtaining the weapon with Brok from The Forge. The next time we see its explosive ability in action is when we’re taking down Heimdall.
- Aside from the Draupnir Spear coming in clutch in our fight against Heimdall, it doesn’t really have any other significant roles in the game. If it wasn’t added to the game, we think we still would have finished God of War: Ragnarok with just our Axe and Blades. Minus the parts where you’ll need to detonate some rocks or use it as a means to vault over large gaps, of course.
