Why did Grimes sue Elon Musk? Parental Rights Explained

Grimes Elon Musk parental rights lawsuit

Elon Musk is in the news again, all thanks to a parental rights lawsuit against him from his ex-partner Grimes. The singer and artist is suing the tech billionaire for issues relating to the custodial rights of their children. The controversy went public after Grimes took to Musk-owned X (Twitter) and involved venture capitalist Shivon Zilis. Let’s take a look at why Grimes is suing Elon Musk and explore the parental rights legal battle in detail.

Grimes files parental rights lawsuit against Elon Musk

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, has taken legal action against Elon Musk. While most details of the lawsuit remain confidential, it pertains to matters of parental rights and custody arrangements.

The lawsuit was filed in a California court on September 29th, 2023 and seeks to establish a parental relationship with one of their three children. Many believe it revolves around their youngest child, Techno Mechanicus or Tau.

The Canadian singer had recently voiced out her frustration that she was not allowed to visit one of their children. This ultimately led to legal action against the Tesla CEO. Elon Musk is yet to respond to his ex-partner Grimes’ petition.

Grimes and Elon Musk’s relationship timeline

To understand the possible reasons behind this lawsuit, it is essential to explore the timeline of Grimes and Elon Musk’s relationship. The couple started an on-off romance in 2018, which lasted until September 2021.

During this period, they had three children together. Notably, their first child, X Æ A-Xii, who was born in May 2020, captured global attention for his strikingly unique name. In December 2021, the couple welcomed their daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, or Y, through a surrogate.

Despite their relationship ending in 2021, Elon Musk and Grimes had a third child in 2022, whose name is Techno Mechanicus or Tau, for whom the parental rights lawsuit is unfolding. This was revealed in journalist Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk.

The feud between Grimes and Shivon Zilis explained

For those who don’t know, Elon Musk has a total of ten children with three different partners, one of whom is Shivon Zilis. Musk shares twins, Strider and Azure, with the 37-year-old executive at Neuralink, which is one of his companies.

According to Elon Musk’s biography, Grimes was shocked to find out about the twins’ birth. Now, the parental rights legal dispute takes place against the backdrop of a public feud between Grimes and Shivon Zilis.

Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson, shared photos of the twins on social media, which must have caught Grimes’ attention. In a deleted tweet, she pleaded with Zilis to tell Elon to allow her to see her son or else respond to her lawyer.

Later, Shivon Zilis reached out to her and de-escalated the situation. Grimes clarified on Twitter that the situation wasn’t Zilis’s fault and opened up about how they wanted their kids to grow up together. The women have buried the hatchet and expressed their mutual respect.

What is the parental rights lawsuit about?

It seems like Grimes’ legal action is a measure to establish a well-defined parental relationship with her youngest child, Tau. This is essential when the parents of a child are unmarried, which results in a lot of legal gray areas.

However, it is unlikely for Grimes to seek custodial arrangements since there is no need for it as they were never married or divorced. Child support also seems like a distant step in terms of the legal mechanism.

Grimes’ parental rights lawsuit against Elon Musk will allow her to clearly establish her rights and responsibilities as a mother, regardless of their marital status.
