History of Fortnite

  • After the release of Gears of War 3 in 2011, Epic Games held an internal game jam. The idea of fusing shooter and building game genres led to the birth of Fortnite.
  • Due to a variety of factors, including a shift from UE3 to UE4 (Unreal Engine), a focus on role-playing games rather than shooters, and an artistic shift away from a gloomy to a more whimsical aesthetic, Fortnite’s development was put on hold.
  • As a result of Tencent purchasing a major share in Epic, executives such as Cliff Bleszinski, who had played a crucial role in the creation of Fortnite’s first season, left the company.
  • Epic also sought to enter the games-as-a-service market and enlisted the support of Chinese publisher Tencent. The game’s development was stalled even more when Epic decided to use Fortnite as a testbed for their new “games as a service” model.
