While me and my friends were debating over Dota 2 vs PUBG and their concurrent players, and how one’s better than the other, Fortnite rowed the boat and hit 8.3 million concurrent players just today.
Fortnite released in South Korea this week, that has skyrocketed the numbers. In an interview (all in Korean), Epic Games Korea spokesperson stated that Fortnite had 8.3 million concurrent players worldwide during the time of publishing.
VG247 confirmed it with an Epic Games representative twice and yes, the numbers are correct. It’s interesting to look forward as to how Korean players adopt the Battle Royale mode.
In East Asia, however, PUBG is still the dominating battle royale game. Not the actual PC and Xbox versions, but the Mobile ones. In India, there isn’t any teenager who’s digitally connected and haven’t heard of or played PUBG Mobile.
The free-to-play strategy is the next 101 developers should follow to capture a market like ours. Fortnite is yet to make a solid presence in our country and I speculate it will spread like wildfire once it releases on a wide range of Android devices.
