Epic Games: Unreal Engine 5 Officially Released to the Public

The future is here! After 8 long years of waiting, Epic Games is finally releasing Unreal Engine 5!

Epic Games just officially opened a new door of opportunity for creators across all industries – gaming, tv shows, movies, architecture, simulation, broadcasting, presentation, and more.

Unreal Engine 5 and What it Does

Unreal Engine 5 is the latest and most advanced real-time 3D creation tool today. It enables creators, developers, or almost anyone to create even the most impossible things. With its state-of-the-art technology, game developers will find this extremely useful in their ambitious creations.

One example of Unreal Engine 5’s product is Fortnite: Chapter 3 released back in December of 2021. Another example, CD Projekt Red’s latest project, The Witcher, is also reported to be adopting UE 5’s technology. Aside from games, the hit Star Wars spinoff series, The Mandalorian is also part of the gang. Previously, the show had already used Unreal Engine for their virtual sets. As of now, it is very hard to top the realism and quality Unreal Engine produces.

What’s New?

  • Lumen and Nanite

Lumen is a Latin word for “Light”, and as the name suggests, it will be in charge of the global illumination and in-depth reflections. With Lumen, you don’t have to worry about working with lighting angles, lightmaps, or capturing reflections.

Nanite, on the other hand, helps with splendid geometrical detailing that provides an avenue for high-quality visual assets while maintaining frame rate and fidelity.

Have you heard that Epic Games wants to make you an offer you can’t refuse, just kidding! Lyra is a UE 5’s starter project which is a multiplayer shooter game. With Lyra on board, this could lead to a whole new learning experience for game developers and developer wannabes.
