Disney’s Baymax Draws Criticism For Representing LGBTQ+ Characters

Baymax - LGBTQ+

After Disney received flak for featuring an on-screen kiss between two lesbian characters in LIGHTYEAR, the Baymax series is in hot water this time around. In Disney’s Baymax series, the company is receiving criticism for representing LGBTQ+ characters in the series. Read on to find out more.

Right-wing conservatives are flaming Disney’s Baymax for LGBTQ+ representation

Last June 29, Disney launched a new animated series on their streaming platform ‘Disney+’. And although Baymax is a fan favorite among everyone who saw Big Hero 6, some viewers were displeased with some certain scenes in the animated series.

To be specific, right-wing conservatives in America are calling Disney out for re-engineering the “discourse around kids and sexuality.”

The scenes in question are short and connected to the whole concept of the Baymax series. And although they are both controversial for right-wing conservatives, the scene which received the most criticism was the grocery store scene.

In the scene, Baymax goes on a trip to the supermarket to pick up some feminine hygiene products for his patient. And as Baymax decides on which menstrual pads to get, the healthcare robot receives advice from strangers.

Among the shoppers who talk to Baymax is an individual wearing a shirt bearing the colors of the trans flag. Additionally, his low voice hints that he is a transmasculine individual. Because of this, the right-wing conservatives are having a field day with Disney+’s Baymax.

The Baymax series centers around the robot being a “personal healthcare companion”

Before it officially launched on Disney’s streaming service, the Baymax series is assumed to focus on the robot’s adventures in San Fransokyo. Baymax gets to meet all sorts of individuals who need help with healthcare matters. And aside from tending to physical injuries, Baymax also helps patients who are going through emotional ordeals.

Apart from helping a little girl who just got her first period, some conservatives also called out a particular scene concerning two male characters. During the scene, Baymax gives support and courage to a male character who appears to be sweating.

To explain his nervousness, Baymax tells the male character, “Your pituitary gland is secreting hormones into your bloodstream.”

Afterwards, the healthcare robot encourages the boy to ask another boy out on a date. When the other boy accepts the invitation to go on a date, they walk off together. To end the episode, Baymax leaves viewers with the parting words: “You are in good health.”

For right-wing conservatives, they believe that Baymax pushes the gay agenda onto oblivious children. Another progressive featured in the series is an “All-Gender Bathroom,” much to the annoyance and frustration of conservatives.

Most of these conservatives feel that Disney should re-evaluate the content they are putting out, claiming they are harmful for young audiences.
