Why Did The Twinkling Watermelon Couple Receive Backlash? Netizens React

Who here is watching the intriguing K-drama Twinkling Watermelon? Because we are excited to witness how the story of the on-screen couples would unfold. You see, the drama has caught a lot of fans with unexpected twists and turns, but one Twinkling Watermelon couple raised the netizens’ eyebrows. Here’s everything we got!

The Brewing Romance Of Eun Gyeol and ‘Se Kyung’

Back in high school, we are sure that it was not only Ha Yi Chan, Yoon Chung A, Ha Eun Gyeol, and Choi Se Kyung who fell in love. The two couples have earned quite a following, especially Eun Gyeol, played by actor Ryeo Un, and Se Kyung, portrayed by actress Seol In A. For the uninitiated, Twinkling Watermelon is a Korean drama focusing on a time travel situation, trying to find out things and change events that could affect the present.

  • The characters of Eun Gyeol and Se Kyung started to feel something towards each other in the latter part of the show. While Eun Gyeol tries to move his father away from Se Kyung, he is the one who falls in love with her. However, this raised the viewers’ eyebrows, and you may ask why. At present, Choi Se Kyung is a middle-aged woman whom Eun Gyeol met before he was transported back in 1995. Technically, Se Kyung is the same as his parents, as he even called her ahjumma.
  • This Twinkling Watermelon couple earned mixed reactions from the show’s viewers. Eun Gyeol ended up kissing her during Episode 12, which he soon beat himself for. He knows about their age gap at present, which somehow bothered him. However, he turns everything upside down when he tells Se Kyung that he doesn’t care whether she’s an ahjumma or even a zombie.

This confession stirred some viewers into a spiral and talked about the couple. Some find this romance a bit creepy because of the huge age gap, which Eun Gyeol is aware of but still pursues.

  • We agree with this side of the coin that it actually looks weird to witness how an 18-year-old fell in love with the 18-year-old self of a middle-aged woman whom he knew. However, we get the point that it’s Eun Yu, who is Se Kyung’s 18-year-old daughter at present. But still, the thought of Eun Gyeol wanting to be with ahjumma doesn’t sit quite well with us, too.

On the other hand, these words caught some giggling and kicking their feet in the air. They appreciate how Eun Gyeol lets himself be free to do what he wants and who he loves.

Teenage Love Of The Twinkling Watermelon Couples

By the way, just a few more spoilers from the most recent episode: Eun Gyeol and Eun Yu finally knew they both came from the future (or the present). The two continued their relationship and now openly seeing each other, with the rest of the band knowing.

However, there’s still an underlying question: Is Eun Yu the girlfriend of Eun Gyeol’s brother, Eun Ho, at the present? Oh, we can’t wait to know more about this one!

Yi Chan and Cheong A have been going strong, too. Unfortunately, the only problem they have on their plate is Cheong A’s family. It’s worth watching how these two, the parents of Eun Gyeol, naturally fall into the pit of love. Their scenes and interactions are so wholesome that we can’t seem to take our eyes off them when they appear.

The efforts they make for each other, the patience, and the care — you can see how Yi Chan tries his best to reach and understand Cheong A’s life, while the latter effortlessly makes Yi Chan a happier and full of love version of himself.

Will it be a happy ending?

As of now, we’re still wondering how things will turn out for everyone. There are many unanswered questions still, but hopefully, it will be all patched up until the finale. But we’re betting this will be a happy ending. Based on how Yi Chan and Cheong A are at present, they are living their best lives with their sons, Eun Gyeol and Eun Ho.

As for Se Kyung and Eun Yu, hopefully, the mother and daughter could fix their relationship and try to meet halfway. It would be interesting how Eun Yu would reach out to her mom after all the things she knew (and could know) from Se Kyung’s past.

We hope to see more of Twinkling Watermelon, especially when it’s about to end this coming week. The last two episodes of the K-drama are set to arrive on Monday and Tuesday, November 13 and 14, KST, respectively.

So, Viva La Vida fans, we think we’ll have to prepare some tissues as we may cry tears of sadness and joy at the finale. See you next week!
