In a surprise announcement, DC Comics revealed that the latest Superman is going to be bisexual. The son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Jon Kent, is bisexual; he kisses Jay Nakamura in the upcoming issue of “Superman: Son of Kal-El”.
Scheduled to release in November, the new issue will depict Jon Kent taking up the role of Superman following his father, Clark Kent. The series, which started in July, has already shown Jon engaging with issues of climate change, school shootings, and deportation of refugees from the US. On National Coming Out Day, DC Comics made the announcement that Jon will be bisexual.
While particular details of the plot are yet to reveal themselves, it is known that Jon meets Jay, a pink-haired reporter, and befriends him. DC has said that the romance begins between the pair. Particularly, when Jon “mentally and physically burns out from trying to save everyone that he can”.

“It struck me that it would be a real missed opportunity if we replaced Clark Kent with another straight white savior”.
– Tom Taylor, BBC Interview
- He pitched his idea that Superman would be bisexual. Soon after, he found out that DC Comics had already been thinking about it.
- He also stated that there has been backlash and disappointment with the change. However, he is happy with the overwhelming support and positive response that the announcement has been receiving. This marks a change in the framework of the imagination of superheroes, who are saviors and powerful beings.
- This change in how superheroes are perceived is the beginning of another area where inclusivity is being normalized. People can find aspects about themselves reflected in something as popular and wide-reaching, where people find that such a world reflects their own.
