In support of women’s rights and equality, the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise covered travel costs for employees after Roe v. Wade Ruling was overturned.
What is Roe v. Wade Ruling and why is it important for women’s rights and equality?
Roe v. Wade started when Norma McCorvey (Legal Pseudonym: Jane Roe), became pregnant with her 3rd child in 1969. Roe wants an abortion but Texas Laws indicate that it is illegal. Although, it is legal if the condition mother is in a fatal condition and should take an abortion.
With this, Roe’s attorneys Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee filed a lawsuit on behalf of Roe in the US Federal Court against Texas local district attorney Henry Wade. Thus, Roe v. Wade. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas’ three-judge panel ruled in favor of Roe and declared the relevant Texas abortion statutes unconstitutional.
Roe v. Wade was a historic Supreme Court decision. The Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protects a pregnant woman’s right to decide on abortion. The decision invalidated many federal and state abortion laws.
The case also ignites a recurring abortion debate in the United States about whether or not abortion should be legal. Aside from this, there are also questions about who should decide the legality of abortion. Moreover, questions such as what role moral and religious beliefs should play in the political sphere arose. The case also influenced the debate over which methodological approaches the Supreme Court should employ in constitutional adjudication.
Whatever the case may be, the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling fortified women’s rights and established the constitutional right to abortion. But, the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision overturned the ruling. As a consequence, most likely, nearly half of the US, conservative ones, will roll back and put restrictions on abortion including Ohio.
Like the light at the end of a tunnel, however, the Cleveland Cavalier Franchise almost immediately expressed its support for equality in women’s rights.
After the overturning of Roe V. Wade, Ohio announced the six-week heartbeat bill will be implemented. This means that after six weeks of pregnancy, women will be unable to obtain an abortion in the state unless the mother’s health is compromised or a baby’s heartbeat can no longer be detected.
In response, the franchise believes that women should have the ability to choose and have unrestricted access to reproductive health care. Hence, the Cleveland Cavaliers will shoulder all transportation costs required by their employees needing or choosing abortion.

Prioritizing the well-being of our Team Members (employees) means ensuring they have the ability to make personal decisions about their health and future. We will now cover costs to travel outside Ohio for reproductive health care to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Everyone should have freedom of choice which includes access to health care. As progressive as the US may be, it seems that the Roe v. Wade overturning took the states more than 5 decades back. Even more so, in other parts of the world, which this may cascade through.
