Catholic priest is stripped of his duties for permitting filming of Sabrina Carpenter’s Feather music video

New York Times has published a story revealing that a Brooklyn-based Catholic church has relieved their priest for allowing Sabrina Carpenter to shoot the concluding parts of her ‘Feather’ music video within the premises.

In the video, the 24-year-old pop star helps obnoxious men meet their karma by facilitating their deaths. Throughout the video, the cat-callers get run over by a truck, fight each other, and end up choking after their tie gets stuck in an elevator door. At the end of the video, Carpenter dances at their funeral, posing with their coffin reading ‘RIP B-‘ in a short black tulu and veil.

This concluding scene is filmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation Parish in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After the music video was released, Bishop Robert J. Brennan shared his shock with the Catholic News Agency stating he was appalled.

He further shared that the parish did not follow diocesan policy regarding the filming on Church property. Basically, the scenes and script weren’t reviewed before receiving permission to film on the site.

Subsequently, the pastor, Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello was stripped of his administrative duties. He published an apology on the church’s Facebook page revealing that he approved the filming in September after not finding anything against Carpenter online.

He aimed to strengthen the bonds between young artists who form a great part of the community. However, he was only alerted about a funeral scene and didn’t know the details present in the final result.

Netizens say ‘It isn’t that deep’

Many of the online users have come to defend the music video and Catholic priest Gigantiello after the news went viral. They have shared their disappointment about the disciplinary action stating that the consequences are too severe for something as minor as this.

They have also taken this opportunity to point out that oftentimes priests who have participated in far more misconduct get away without any repercussions. Some have shared that none of the entertainment pieces including music videos and films should be allowed to be filmed inside real churches. Meanwhile, others have expressed their enthusiasm for visiting the church because it appeared in the music video.
