Can you play Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on PC?

Zelda fans get ready to once again enter the amazing world of Hyrule. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is scheduled to release on 12th May 2023. Upon its release, there is a high level of anticipation within the gaming community to learn specific details about the game. Talks of the new installment to the Zelda series are all over the internet now. Zelda TOTK is expected to be one of the best games in the Nintendo Switch generation. Does this mean that it won’t be available on PC? The PC emulation gaming community’s biggest question is answered here.

Will Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom be available on PC?

We all know Nintendo makes games exclusive to their consoles. Nintendo has never released one of its major titles on PC yet. Over the years gamers have been using emulators to play Nintendo games on PC. Well, the question is will it be the same for Zelda TOTK as well? At the moment, the answer to this question is in the midst of an existential crisis, meaning can’t be fully answered yet. The game is set to be released on the Nintendo Switch only.

Legally, no. You can’t play Nintendo games including TOTK on PC. The prequel of Legend of Zelda TOTK, that is, Legend of Zelda BOTW has been seen making its way to PCs through emulators like Yuzu. Will it be the same for Tears of the Kingdom? I can’t say for sure, but for many people, it’s a no.

Nintendo and its lawsuits:

  • Nintendo vigorously protects its intellectual property, including its games, characters, and consoles, from unauthorized use or infringement.
  • Over the years, Nintendo has filed lawsuits against individuals and companies involved in the distribution of unauthorized copies of its games or consoles.
  • Nintendo has issued a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to Lockpick to take it down. (Lockpick enables users to play a Switch game that they do not own, which essentially means playing a game obtained through piracy.)

Its Effect on the Emulation Community

Nintendo Swtich emulator Yuzu : Switch emulations

  • The Emulation community has received a great blow. Emulators like Skyline emulator have decided to shut down so as to avoid the headache of going through all of this.
  • Emulators like Yuzu are still up, but it’s not possible to speculate as of now as to when will it see Legend of Zelda: TOTK files.
  • Perhaps, never? Nintendo is becoming more and more strict regarding its games. However, people on the internet are smart. It’s only a matter of time until they come up with alternative ways to pirate and emulate on PC the game once released.
