Black Adam: Love it, hate it, or be cool with it

Black Adam hits theaters on October 19 and earlier in other countries. It was quite received with cold shoulders. Well, for me, personally. Heads up, some spoilers here (Dwayne Johnson must be proud). Breakdowns of this film are already out there but basically, I’m just gonna describe what I feel about this movie.

Right. Let me dive straight into it. The movie is nice but it just lacked that gentle touch. Yes, black Adam is known for being brutal and morbid and rebellious and it says so in the entire movie but the aggressiveness was so contagious that, for most parts, it becomes tiring for the viewer to catch up. It is not allowing the audience to take a breather in order to take in the information after a scene. Establishing shots are slightly disregarded in this movie then we get characters introduced right away via Waller and Hawkman’s mission briefing.

The movie is acceptably long but they compress the action sequences to fit but somehow unnecessary, I think. It is hard to follow some of it because the audio mixing, dialogues, and sound effects have no balance. In fact, there is one, particular scene where they use a similar action sequence but it confuses me as to why they have to do it over again. Somehow, I was lost in the midst of the storyline.

In another sequence, it particularly irritates me because there are important dialogues with unnecessary background music… And loud, at that. In another important act, Dr. Fate, played by Pierce Brosnan, is talking while fighting off the antagonist and saving the protagonist at the same time by way of duplicating or astral projecting himself. But, what the hell is he babbling about? HE LITERALLY SOUNDS LIKE AN ECHO FROM A TIN WATER PAIL.

Look, I don’t entirely hate the film. There are still good parts that will surely make you invested in the making of this movie. Dwayne might have given justice to bring Black Adam to life. His build, viciousness, and charisma contributed well to the whole being of Teth and the failed reign of Sabbac, the demon villain in this film.

You will also love the backstory and will come to know why and how he becomes Black Adam. He was ALMOST the “Champion that never was.”(If you are watching House of the Dragon then yes, I think this reference is quite important. Not related but… quite important. You’ll soon find out when you watch it).

  • In the comics and animation, Black Adam is a merciless anti-hero and you will love his rage and his unforgiving gestures in this movie. You will also love the cameos in this film. There are quite a few but one important superhero has leaked all over the internet. You might want to check that out.
  • Also, if you have watched Suicide Squad and Peacemaker there is one familiar face from those shows that appears in this film.

For what it’s worth, this movie introduces the Justice Society of America. Unlike the Justice League, Amanda Waller’s Black Ops regulates them. It’s like they’re the team who follows the provisions of the Sokovia Accords. (Just a what if…). Dwayne has actually been vocal about the JSA in his interviews.

Of course, this film introduces Hawkman. Dr. Fate is here too. Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo – All the Boys I loved before, Charlie’s Angels) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell – Trinkets, Euphoria) also make their debut to take down or regulate Teth Adam.

As established earlier, the superhero I’m referring to is Superman who makes his appearance in the post-credits scene. They should talk, really, and make things exciting for the DC universe.
