The founders of the well-known YouTube comedy channel Smosh, Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, recently announced their comeback and are taking back ownership of the brand in an unexpected turn of events. Padilla is back after quitting Smosh in 2017 to work as an independent content creator. Following the downfall of the channel’s previous owner, Defy Media, the pair is purchasing Smosh back from fellow content creators Rhett & Link. Following the announcement of Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox buying Smosh, they are prepared to restore the magic that made Smosh special.
History of Padilla and Hecox With Smosh
- As a joint organization between Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, Smosh was formed in 2005. Two buddies posted hilarious films online, which was a straightforward yet captivating idea.
- Smosh became a significant channel in the YouTube comedy scene over time, and at one point, it even held the record for the channel with the most subscribers. Smosh was able to establish a devoted following with over 25 million followers who eagerly watched the shenanigans of Hecox and Padilla.
- Anthony Padilla decided to quit Smosh in 2017 to go after independent creator work. This proved to be a challenging decision because of what happened afterwards.
Hecox and Padilla reunite
- The friendship between Padilla and Hecox fell apart due to this decision. However, fate had a different plan for the duo as they reunited around 2022.
- During their reunion, the duo realized the possibilities they had while collaborating. Ian Hecox states, “Our friendship had to end for us to be able to come back together.”
- After Defy Media’s departure in 2019, Rhett & Link’s Mythical Entertainment bought Smosh, giving the brand a chance for survival. Rhett & Link supported Smosh’s legacy and contributed to its continued success.

- For now, it looks like Smosh will still operate through its previous channels. However, a new channel may be introduced under the name of Smosh so they can carry on their legacy.
