Talks about a loyalty program for Sony PlayStation users have been going on for quite some time now but it was only recently that the company unveiled more information about it. During the latest State of Play, Sony took that opportunity to explain PlayStation Stars, their loyalty program for their users. In this article, we’ll be mapping out everything you need to know about PlayStation Stars, including how to qualify and join.
The concept of a rewards or loyalty program when it comes to video game consoles isn’t new. Xbox users can earn Microsoft Points by completing quests or making purchases for their consoles. The same goes for Nintendo Gold Points as any digital purchase you make for the Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and the 3DS rewards you with points.
What is the Sony PlayStation Stars program?
This is Sony’s own rewards program designed for PlayStation users, and it doesn’t matter if you are subscribed to the PlayStation Plus service or not. The main goal of this program is to earn Loyalty Points which can be used to redeem items from the PS Store. It will also determine your status level in the program. You can earn these loyalty points mainly by participating in campaigns hosted by Sony.
- Sony has something for every player in their PlayStation Stars program
- For hardcore and competitive gamers, there will be campaigns that allow you to participate in tournaments
- As for the casual gamers, some campaigns only require you to play a game or collect trophies
- Completing the campaigns gives users loyalty points for PlayStation Stars members
- Loyalty points can be used to top up your PSN wallet
- Other products on the PlayStation Store are also redeemable with these loyalty points
- Other stuff you can earn from the PlayStation Stars program is the “digital collectibles”
- Some fans think these are NFTs or non-fungible tokens but Sony denied these allegations
- Having a higher status level means more perks and benefits for you
Do I need a PlayStation Plus subscription to join?
The good news is the PlayStation Stars program is open to all PS users. This means that whether or not you’re a PS Plus subscriber, you can still earn loyalty points.

But since the PS Plus is a paid service, there are additional perks for subscribers once they join PlayStation Stars. They automatically earn points for any purchase they make from the PlayStation Store. This includes renewing their PlayStation Plus subscription.
Unfortunately, a simple wallet top up will not grant you loyalty points for this program.
How to join
We already mentioned that PlayStation Stars is free for all PlayStation users. All you have to do is register your PSN account which you can do in three ways:
- Download the PlayStation App on your iOS device
- It is also available for Android users
- The last alternative is to join PlayStation Stars through the official PS website
At the moment, there is no way to sign up for PlayStation Stars through the consoles, but Sony did promise that they are expanding to consoles soon.
Release Date
The PlayStation Stars program is already available for users in Asia (including Japan) since September 29. Other regions will get the program on different dates:

All players who join the program automatically get the Star Gazer Telescope, one of the many digital collectibles included in the PlayStation Stars program. According to the official blog post from Sony, other digital collectibles coming soon are the following:
