Eichiro Oda has crafted a story with multiple layers and mysteries, referencing different cultures and phenomena around the world with more than a thousand chapters. The fans of One Piece have a lot of faith in him when it comes to storytelling and rightfully so. If one goes back to reading or watching One Piece, there’s no doubt that they’ll find easter eggs hinting towards the future events of the manga.Â
Gear 5 is not excluded from this. As soon as Gear 5 was introduced, fans started discovering all the points where Gear 5 was foreshadowed. At the same time, a vocal minority claimed that Gear 5 came out of nowhere without any prior warnings or hints.Â
All Gear 5 references from SkypieaÂ
Skypiea has been a prominent arc for the One Piece fandom. While most of the fans believe that Skypiea is very important to the entire story, many fans believe that skipping Skypiea makes no difference. The second claim can be heavily refuted now that Gear 5 has become a hot topic again. There have been some apparent and hidden references that foreshadowed Gear 5 in Skypiea.Â
Luffy and the Sun

There have been multiple instances in One Piece where the Sun shines upon him every time Luffy defeats a villain.Â
- We see one such instance very early in the story in Arlong Park. When Luffy defeats Arlong, the sun shines upon him. That is also the moment when Luffy frees Cocoyashi Village and Nami from the reigns of Arlong.Â
- In Skypiea, the same thing happens in Episode 192. When Luffy defeats Enel, the Sun shines upon Sky Island. The background events make it more prominent in terms of foreshadowing, as all the citizens of Skypiea were praying to God.Â
The first mention of the Sun God

It was in Skypiea when the Sun God was mentioned for the first time along with three other gods. Throughout Skypiea we see Connis and the others praying to God. All the prayers are met by none other than Luffy himself later on. While fighting Enel who is the fake God, Luffy refutes what Enel stands for; reinstating that someone who can’t save anyone is no God.Â
The Dancing Silhouette

The Dancing silhouette of Luffy from Skypiea has been trending ever since the reveal of Gear 5. In the anime, we see Usopp behind Luffy. He beats the drums while Luffy dances along with the others. It might be an overshot assumption but that is how Gear 5 is revealed along with the Drums of Liberation as the background music.Â
ConclusionÂ
On a broader scale, the most extensive reference to Gear 5 has been Luffy’s goal. Luffy wants to become the Pirate King as he’s the man with the most freedom in the world Throughout the story, he has made all the efforts to ensure his release along with those around him. Parallel to this is, Sun God Nika who is the Warrior of Liberation.
There’s no denying the possibility that maybe not everything was planned out by Oda from the beginning. But there’s also a slight chance that he might have taken inspiration from his work. After all, he is the one who best understands the potential One Piece holds.
