The news of the crime took over the headlines across the state because of the history of the Murdaugh family. They were respectful people who controlled a regional prosecutor’s office in South Carolina for more than 80 years.

Here are all the updates related to the Alex Murdaugh case which became the reason for the downfall of an influential family and the loss of two innocent souls.

The verdict of the Alex Murdaugh case

Following the six-week-long trial of Alex Murdaugh’s murder case the court finally announce its verdict on Friday, March 3. The verdict sentences Murdaugh to life imprisonment on the charges of murdering his wife and son.

The defense efforts for a mistrial were rejected by judge Clifton Newman over the abundance of evidence and testimonies present. The key evidence for the trial is a video taken by his son right before the crime.

The video taken of the dogs at the kennel features the voice of Alex Murdaugh placing him at the crime scene which he previously denied. This along with the circumstantial evidence sealed the case.

The Murdaugh murder and motive

Alex Murdaugh shot his wife, Maggie, and his son Paul on June 7, 2021. He used a shotgun to shoot Paul twice and a rifle for shooting his wife several times.

Prosecutors claimed Murdaugh executed the brutal murder as a means to hide his financial crimes. He had embezzled millions from his clients and colleagues over several years. The chief finance officer of his company also testified of confronting him on the morning of the crime.

There was another lawsuit upcoming on June 10, 2021, involving his son Paul that could have exposed his financial wrongdoings. Which according to prosecutors was the motive behind the murder.

Paul Murdaugh faced accusations of driving a motor boat under the high alcoholic influence which lead to an accident on Beaufort River proving fatal for Mallory Beach.

The testimonies of Alex Murdaugh

The defense tried their best to refute the accusations on Murdaugh debating why would he walk into a murder case as the culprit just to hide his financial crimes. However, what worked against the over-confident lawyer was none other than his testimonies.

In them, for more than a year he insisted on not being anywhere near the crime scene at the time of the murders. However, his alibi didn’t withhold after the discovery of the last video of Paul Murdaugh featuring his voice. Leading to Alex Murdaugh’s life sentence without permission for parole.

This high-profile case once again established the fact that nobody is above the law. Many of the journalists who closely followed the case stated, that Alex Murdaugh’s overconfidence in getting away with the crime lead him to testify. He believed he was above the law and was thoroughly proven wrong.
