‘A Man Called Otto’ is a movie where Hanks examines three key concepts. The idea of love, the tragedy of loss, and the ability to recover. The various social interactions also define his process of recovery and his subsequent acceptance of the truth.

A Man Called Otto and the Idea of Love

Otto was a person who couldn’t get into the army because he had a ‘big heart’. On a return journey back home, with no job at hand and a lost family, he meets Sonya. On a dinner date when Sonya asks Otto why he is not eating a good meal he replies, “I ate at home… So you could order whatever you wanted. ”

The couple falls in love and marries each other. This is a classic story of love in American drama. Whereas, Otto was never a sociable human but it is Sonya who changes him. She gives him a reason to look at life differently. They were totally different human beings, yet complemented each other like night and day.

Otto and the tragedy of loss

Otto loses a part of himself when he loses his wife. The grooming of himself was a result of his interaction with the person he loved. The lens, therefore, is those of the partner with which he looked at the world. Her loss triggered a version of himself that would reject everything that reminded him of her absence.

The socially frustrated individual was constantly trying to make things right. It was an attempt at changing the narrative. He wanted to prove that even after he has lost his anchor he can still create a balance. This made Otto a fairly miserable man. But the tragedy of loss is an inescapable reality. Otto was caught in a trap not of his own.

A Man Called Otto and its Portrayal of Recovery

Otto recovers in an accidental manner. It is his new neighbors who crack open his first words of affirmation. The lady Marisol gives him space for expression and the comfort of vulnerability. He seeps into that space and opens up. This results in the subsequent recovery of his soul and his acceptance of life.

The final scenes of the movie depict a rather jovial tone in Otto’s character. This closure is a result of Marisol’s undertaking of his life and her efforts at understanding him.

Otto Anderson is an ailing man willing to recover but lost. Tom Hanks does honor the character by playing the role. He understands the futility of such characters and therefore delivers such performances. In a way, this movie is a representation of how loneliness affects the human mind and the ability of the same to recover.
