Disney released a new trailer for its upcoming live-action film The Little Mermaid on Thursday, April 27. The film’s stunning visuals received praise from fans worldwide, with the actors looking fabulous as mystical creatures from the world of the ocean. However, not everything about the trailer has been received well.
Fans are concerned about how Disney has animated Ariel’s best friend, Flounder. The animators have swapped the expressive, bright yellow fish with a pale yellow reef fish that looks expressionless.
Disney also shared images of the character in an Instagram post, which began a meme fest online. Some even joked saying that the fish was modeled after Fargo actor Steve Buscemi.

Internet shares hilarious memes about Flounder from Disney’s The Little Mermaid live action
The latest trailer shared new visuals from the movie, including characters like Ursula played by Melissa Mcarthy, and Titan played by Javier Bardem. Viewers also saw shots of Ariel’s sidekick friends Flounder and Sebastian. The characters play vital roles in the movie as the close companion to our little mermaid. However, they now look very different from their original designs.
In the 1989, original animated movie, Flounder was a bright yellow fish with a round face and big expressive eyes. Children were able to connect to the fish that was voiced by Jason Marin. However, the current rendition of the character has less expression. Going by the live-action theme, Flounder’s new design looks like a regular fish. The character is voiced by the talented Jacob Tremblay but lacks emotions due to its small, lidless, fish-like eyes.
Fans don’t seem happy about the change as they voiced their opinion on social media. Internet users had a field day roasting the character with some hilarious memes. Here are some of the best memes from Twitter:

Flounder was not alone, as people also joked about King Tritan’s loyal subject, Sebastian the crab. Sebastian the annoyed Jamaican crab from the original movie looks like a plain-old real crab in the live-action movie. This is what the internet thought about the crustacean:
Are these posters for The Little Mermaid or an aquarium?
Also, Sebastian looks like his eyes are ai generated.

The movie has been in the news for several reasons in the past. Many had issues when Halle Bailey was introduced as Ariel in the first teaser. Many did not like the idea of changing the mermaid’s race. Some even criticized the dull visuals in the promos asking for brighter and more vivid surroundings.
The movie also came to the news when its makers decided to tweak the lyrics of “Kiss the Girl,” to make it more appropriate for the current times.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid will release in theatres on May 26, 2023.
