“Everyone can stop blaming guns now”: Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene’s transphobic tweets spark outrage after Nashville school shooting

Controversial Republican leader Marjorie Taylor Greene’s transphobic tweets on the recent Nashville school shooting have landed her in hot water. The far-right Congresswoman diverted attention towards the shooter’s gender and made a series of transphobic as well as pro-gun tweets. Twitter has restricted her account after a particular post which showed a picture of a rally poster that read “Trans Day of Vengeance”.

28-year-old Audrey Hale killed three 9-year-old children and three staff members in a shooting at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. The shooter’s gender has been a subject of debate on social media as reports suggest that she is a trans woman. Right-wing activists like Marjorie Taylor Greene seem to be politicizing this fact and polarizing the general population.

The US representative for Georgia’s 14th congressional district took aim at the Nashville shooter’s gender while avoiding criticism of American gun ownership laws. Marjorie Taylor Greene took a dig at hormone therapy as she claimed the shooter was taking testosterone.

She openly stated that everyone can stop blaming guns now which has caused an uproar on social media. In a separate tweet, she called for President Biden and the Democrats to pay for “more good guys with guns” to protect American school children.

Marjorie Taylor Greene also retweeted a screenshot of the shooter Audrey Hale’s social media account which had displayed pronouns “he/him”. The Congresswoman has always been openly against transgender rights and legislation on Capitol Hill.

Criticism towards Marjorie Taylor Greene and her comments

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, better known as AOC, labeled Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comments as ‘disgusting’. She condemned her for comparing people with the same guns and weapons that they are killed with.

Twitter users have called out Marjorie Taylor Greene’s lack of empathy for using the school shooting as an opportunity to blame Biden, Democrats and gun control activists. Mental health specialists and transgender rights activists have also criticized the Congresswoman for blaming the shooting on hormones and medication instead of guns.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Twitter account suspension

The Republican leader’s Congressional Twitter account has been temporarily suspended after she shared a poster that read “Trans Day of Vengeance”. However, Marjorie Taylor Greene has tweeted from her personal account that she was restricted for “exposing Antifa”.

Antifa is an anti-fascist and anti-racist left-wing organization which never gets along with Republicans. She tagged Elon Musk and requested for her account to be unrestricted.

The congresswoman’s history of opposing transgender rights and supporting guns

Marjorie Taylor Greene has often stated that transgender people are mentally ill and that the law should not protect their rights. She has consistently opposed legislation that would protect the rights of transgender individuals.

In a tweet, Greene referred to the Equality Act as “an attack on God’s creation.” She also referred to transgender individuals as “mentally ill men who believe they are women”. Greene claims that they “should not have the right to live as they please and force their delusions on society.”

Furthermore, she believes that the government should not be able to restrict an individual’s access to firearms. She has been a vocal opponent of gun control measures such as universal background checks and red flag laws.
