After teachers from the Donda Academy filed a lawsuit against the institution, shocking details about the Kanye West-run school have emerged online. The lawsuit describes the place as a strange school where students eat sushi every day in a lunchroom without tables, chairs, or utensils. The Christian private school has no janitorial staff or school nurses, and teachers don’t have guidelines for lessons or disciplining students.
Kanye West founded a private school in 2022 named after his mother, Donda West, who was a former English chair at Chicago State University. He had kept it quiet until last year, but his statements about George Floyd’s murder and his hateful comments about the Jewish community, including praising Hitler, caused problems.
The school briefly closed in October due to the antisemitic interview he gave, but quickly reopened. As a result, many parents and staff began to leave the school because of Ye’s controversial behavior.
Lawsuit exposes bizarre details and disturbing conditions about Kanye West’s Donda Academy
Two former teachers are suing Kanye West‘s Donda Academy for labor violations and unusual school rules. The lawsuit alleges that the kids were only allowed to eat sushi, the school lacked janitorial services, and teachers and students couldn’t wear jewelry.Â

It also claims the academy didn’t meet education requirements, had unusual rules such as no crossword puzzles or coloring sheets, and students couldn’t use forks. The lawsuit says there were no classes on the second floor, and students had to wear black West-designed apparel.Â
The school had no chairs, so students sat on cushions or stood. They ate lunch on the floor, and recess was indoors. Furthermore, brands like Nike and Adidas were banned.
Who is suing Kanye West and his Christian private school?
Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers, two former teachers at Donda Academy, filed the lawsuit against the Kanye West-run school. They allege a violation of the state’s labor code and retaliation. Donda Academy fired them on March 3, 2023, without giving a reason.
The lawsuit claims that the teachers complained about health and safety violations, including a lack of disciplinary systems. Donda Academy’s principal, Moira Love, allegedly called them “aggressive.” Hailey and Byers were the only Black teachers at the school.
Byers claims that she never received her first paycheck, and both teachers allege that their paychecks were often short by $1,800 to $2,700 per pay period.
Kanye West’s recent history of controversies
Kanye West lost deals with Adidas, Balenciaga, Gap, and JP Morgan Chase due to his false and racist statements. This led to him losing over $1.5 billion from his fortune.
The plaintiffs’ attorney claimed that Kanye’s mismanagement of the Donda Academy school is evidence of his unusual behavior. He allegedly enabled an unsafe and illegal environment that discriminated against the plaintiffs. Kanye needs to focus on music, not school administration, the attorney said.Â
The plaintiff Byers expressed her sadness in a news release, saying it was an honor to work at Donda Academy. She admires Kanye’s music but thinks the school’s vision is chaotic and disorganized, comparing it to a mental hospital run by patients.
