Counter-Strike 2 smokes system: How will it work in upcoming sequel?

Counter-Strike 2 smokes explained

The long-awaited Counter-Strike 2 has been revealed and is said to be shipping with Source 2. The new engine will feature support for 128-tick servers and introduce core gameplay improvements.

One of the most game-changing features is the inclusion of volumetrics with smoke grenades. Instead of using pre-rendered smokes in the game, CS2 will be using dynamic smokes that adapt to the environment. This article will explain all these things about smoke grenades in detail.

How does the smoke system work in Counter-Strike 2?

The reveal made by valve regarding smoke showed a lot of details about the game’s new system. They can be sub-classified into the following:

1) Volumetric smokes with their own hitboxes

To render smokes, the traditional way is to lean towards pre-rendered material. Previously with CS:GO, Valve used this technique to block off the vision for players across systems.

However, with Counter-Strike 2 this is changing as new smokes will be using volumetrics with hitboxes. This allows the renderer to reveal through thick clouds and give vision on another side.

2) Smokes react to the environment and light

Another feature that was revealed about the smokes in Counter-Strike 2 was how it reacts to the environment. In CS2, the smoke grenades deploy volumetric clouds that simulate to lighting conditions in an environment. Thus, this will make them more realistic to look at.

Additionally, smoke grenades can also fill in enclosed spaces as the hitboxes made by it can reach wider areas, which, in turn, will allow the smoke to spread wider than the intended area.

3) Smokes can react to explosions and bullets

One of the most impressive features of the new smokes grenades in Counter-Strike 2 is how it interacts altogether. Just like real-life variants, CS2’s smokes also disappear when explosions happen near it.

This will cause them to dissipate and allow vision through. So, for instance, if a view is blocked for the player through smoke, they can use a frag grenade as a utility to remove them momentarily.
