Netflix Confirms BioShock Movie Is In Development

On 15 February 2022, after quite a long wait, Netflix finally dropped the confirmation that the BioShock movie is in the making. This movie will be the adaption of the famous BioShock video-game franchise. Through its official Twitter account, Netflix announced that the BioShock movie would be a collaborative effort. Netflix will be teaming up with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to make this movie.

The official post did not hint at the direction of the movie’s plot, whether it will be an amalgamation of various episodes of many games of this video-game franchise combined, or it will purely focus on the episodes of BioShock’s first video game. As of now, we don’t know any other details about this upcoming Netflix movie.

BioShock Video Game Franchise

The BioShock video game is an award-winning franchise by 2K, taking the global gaming scene by storm. Players were particularly curious about the game’s setting. With post-apocalyptic, grim, bleak background, the game has successfully merged horror and sci-fi genres. This convergence is exceptionally unique as it changed the conventional gaming narratives.

The game is much more than its setting, background, and plot; its gameplay is astounding. It is gratifying. Intelligent planning, fatal improvisation, and sharpshooting, among others, will garner players excellent rewards.

The game has expanded over time to include BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. Furthermore, it has also produced many bundled collections as well remastered series. To date, this gaming franchise has sold over thirty-nine million copies worldwide. Another new game of this franchise is underway from 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio, but no details surrounding its release schedule have been revealed.

BioShock Movie

The movie of BioShock was initially being planned to be released back in 2011. This would have been strategic as it coincided with the third game of BioShock’s release. The movie was all set to be directed by the well-known director of the renowned Pirates of the Caribbean series, Gore Verbinski. But allegedly, due to budgetary constraints and other factors, Gore Verbinski was no longer the director for this movie.

On 15 February 2022, via the official Twitter handle of Netflix, it was confirmed that the movie BioShock is in the making and will be a Netflix exclusive. The movie’s release details have not been unveiled yet.

Movie Details – Unknown

It’s been a while that the deal between the organizations 2K, Take-Two Interactive, and Netflix has been underway. Details surrounding the movie are still unknown. We hence do not know who the writer or the director will be for this movie adaption. Additionally, no clues have been dropped whether the creative director of Ken Levine, the creative director of BioShock, and BioShock Infinite will be part of this movie and contribute to the same.

The part of the video-game franchise which the movie will adapt from is too unknown. This opens the path for many possibilities to spring up. But one million dollar doubt that we have in most minds is that what if the movie adapted loses the allure the game provides? What if it misses the entire experience that BioShock provides?

Towards the later part of 2021, we saw Netflix uplifted the curse of making bad video-game adaptations of Hollywood movies, and we can’t be more grateful. Thus, rest assured, all in all, the BioShock movie, a collaborative effort between Netflix, 2K, and Take-Two Interactive, will definitely be a great watch.
