Indiana Jones 5 finally got its first trailer, along with a title reveal: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Harrison Ford returns to his role as the famed archaeologist for the fifth and final time.
While the first trailer doesn’t reveal the actual “Dial of Destiny”, there are plenty of hints. Additionally, the trailer brings back familiar faces and promises an emotional farewell to old characters as a new generation takes up the torch.Â
Indiana Jones character and franchise
Indiana Jones is a globally revered and beloved character who segues between professions such as archaeologist, university professor, horse jockey and many others.
- Created by George Lucas in 1981, the four-time Oscar-nominated series follows the adventures of Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr. Known for his iconic fedora and his trusty satchel.

- Indiana Jones battles mythological creatures, historical figures and supernatural forces. Each film has an original score composed by John Williams, who has also been the musical director of the series since its inception.
Key takeaways from the trailer
As Dial of Destiny explores the character’s legacy, Indiana Jones and his friend Sallah (played by John Rhys-Davies) will mostly travel to Cairo once again, just like in the previous films.
- The background voice over reveals that Indy has lived a quiet life and stayed away from life-threatening adventures.

- The trailer also shows Indy running on a moving train, but we don’t know if this scene takes place in the present, in 1969, or in the past.
- This is because the trailer plays a lot with the concept of time, layering images from the present and the past without telling fans who is who.

- This may not be a coincidence, and perhaps Indiana Jones’ next archaeological adventure will deal with time travel in some way.
Dial of Destiny‘s major characters
The trailer’s whoa! moment is when we see a CGI de-aged version of Indiana Jones, tied to a chair in a Nazi uniform. And speaking of Nazis, we get a glimpse of Mads Mikkelsen’s Voller in full Nazi uniform, presumably before the end of World War II.

- Phoebe Waller-Bridge stars as Indiana Jones’ goddaughter Helena as they begin their globetrotting adventure. Her presence in the trailer promises that she is going to be more than just another supporting character.Â
- Antonio Banderas also appears briefly, and this has fans excited.

Callback to previous films
The trailer’s final scene is a cheeky little nod to the original Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Harrison Ford’s character simply shoots a guy who shows off his sword skills.

- Here, the tables have turned and it’s Indy who tries to show off with his whip, only to receive a barrage of bullets. So, we can be assured of more nostalgic callbacks like this one in the film.
How the internet reacted
Ever since the trailer dropped, the internet thinks that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will take over the Indiana Jones series after Dial of Destiny. This clearly did not sit well with director James Mangold who clarified the rumors on Twitter.Â
One more time. No one is "taking over" or replacing Indy or donning his hat nor is he being "erased" thru some contrivance— and he never was, not not in any cut or script — but trolls will troll — that's how they get their clicks. 1/

- The Indiana Jones films are a perfect mix of action-adventure and comedy with a touch of drama. However, this is the first time that the iconic Indiana Jones character is not being directed by Steven Spielberg.

- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is touted to release on June 30, 2023. The trailer seems promising but is it good enough for James Mangold to fill in the big shoes of Steven Spielberg?
