Armageddon is a concept that will always persist in the minds of humans. Whether it will be brought about by humans or some other force, alien or otherwise, is something to think about, but cannot be really predicted. But the reality of it does not reduce the excitement over movies that cover incidents that have the potential to end the world. In fact, they help to visualize what the end of the world, if it happens, might be like. Read on to find a list of movies that are based on judgment day.
2012 (2009)
This is probably one of the most-watched movies of recent times. The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar showed that 2012 would mark the beginning of a new cycle after 5,126 long years. These beliefs were conceptualized in different ways, with some believing this would bring a new spiritual or physical change. Some others believed that 2012 would be judgment day.

Theories aside, the movie depicts the world in the year 2012. The elites of human society have prepared for this event, and are safe. The others are left to die. The story follows some of the people who try to make it into the special ships that have been designed to keep people alive long enough.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
This is a more comedic take on the end of life on Earth. Steve Carell and Keira Knightley are strangers who become friends when the end of the world is confirmed.

Carell’s wife leaves him, and Knightley is unable to get back to her family. With only 3 weeks left to live, we follow the two of them, witnessing the things people get up to when they find out they have nothing to live for anymore.
Take Shelter (2011)
Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, the movie is a psychological thriller. Shannon is a young worker, who keeps seeing things that imply something big coming, something apocalyptic. However, no one else can see what he is seeing, not even the thunderstorms or the winds.

People around him get worried. With his mother having paranoid schizophrenia already, the man is left to wonder what is real and what is not, and what he has to do. Definitely a must-watch judgment day movie.
Melancholia (2011)
Starring Kristen Durst, this movie tells the story of two sisters. In this world, another planet, Melancholia is about to collide with the Earth. One of the sisters gets married just in time before the collision, and she is also depressed. The movie is captivating and keeps the viewer engaged and the clock ticks.

Don’t Look Up (2021)
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead, along with other incredible actors, this movie is a comedic film that attempts to reflect on the current situation of the world. A professor and his student discover an extinction-inducing comet flying through space towards the Earth. When they attempt to break the news, there is a range of responses.

Moreover, the political leaders of America take this as lightly as possible (Surprise, surprise! Which elite leader does not have an escape pod?). The people are divided into supporters of campaigns. One asks them to look up and realize what is about to happen, and the Don’t Look Up campaign that tells them they are being suppressed by fear. In the end, does it matter if you look up or not?
Wall-E (2008)
This is a very common one, guessing everybody must have seen this movie at least once. There are different elements to this movie revolving around robots, space travel, humans coddled by technology and AI, life, and love.

Beyond that, it also reflects humankind’s dependency or the dependency that might arise (or has already arisen) on technology and machines, especially even when there are human beings right around us. It shows that some things might be more important than self-satisfaction.
This Is The End (2013)
This one is not as serious as the rest of the movies on this list. An apocalyptic comedy based on the short film Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse, the movie is the directorial debut of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen.

The cast includes James Franco, Jonah Hill, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, Danny McBride, Craig Robison, Jay Baruchel, and Seth Rogen, while a host of other real-life actors make their appearances. The characters are the actors themselves, partying like it is judgment day in James Franco’s house. Guess what, it is the end of the world! The group of friends tries to survive, but end up not succeeding.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Starring Chris Evans, Sang Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, and others in the lead along with others, the movie is set in an Iceballl Earth. Scientists attempt to fix climate change. however, they end up bringing a whole new Ice Age, killing a majority of the population.

The only survivors are those who got on a train named Snowpiercer that travels around the world continues as it runs on an engine that lasts forever. The story is focused on how, even in such a situation, there is a division of people, with the elites in the front and the lower-class at the end of the train. Evans is one of the people at the back and leads a resistance to the front.
Children of Men (2006)
This movie does not focus on any mass extinction-level event. But its story follows something even more frightening. Humanity is unable to reproduce anymore, and the last person to be born dies at the age of 18. Chaos breaks out everywhere.

6T there are military and police personnel wherever one goes, and seemingly no future for the human race. But, there is hope. One woman is pregnant but is unable to get past all the chaos to safety. A civil servant (Oliver Clive) has to get her to safety and make sure that humankind has a chance at survival.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Starring Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal, this movie is another based on climate change. Climate change disrupts the North Atlantic Ocean’s circulation. The Earth undergoes extreme weather changes that bring on a new ice age. With temperatures dropping rapidly, people struggle to survive.
